Stroke Survivor Sets Up New Holmfirth Drop In Session
Holmbridge Stroke Survivor Launches New Community Drop in
Holmbridge stroke survivor, Richard Ford is to launch a new community activity session to help people get “out and about”. Former marathon runner, and father of three, Richard, who suffered a brain stem stroke in 2012, is running the new sessions with support of staff and volunteers from the Opening Doors Project.
Having made a recovery from being “locked in”, Richard is now determined to tackle his difficulties head on, by launching the sessions, based at St David’s Church, Holmbridge. The sessions will offer a variety of slow-paced activities, to meet the needs and abilities of the participants. The first session will be held at 2pm -3.30pm on Wednesday 10th May, and at the same time on the two subsequent Wednesdays. Participants are welcome to attend on their own or with family / friends or carers. The first session will be a “get to know you” session, with participants will have the opportunity to tell staff about what they hope to do in the future sessions; followed by some fun activities.
Opening Doors Project Officer, Fiona Hall said:
“This is a really important project for Richard. He wants to help inspire people who may be feeling lonely or isolated, or simply that they feel they don’t fit in. He wants to encourage them to get out, and as such has put himself forward into the spotlight to demonstrate, that with support, it is possible to overcome fears, and difficulties, and find worthwhile activities.”
The Opening Doors Project staff will be on hand at all three sessions, after which a decision will be made regarding future sessions content and venue. Fiona Hall explained “It has to be suitable for the people who come, so until we know the interests of the people who attend we don’t know exactly what the session will be – safe to say it will hopefully match their expectations.”
Anyone who wishes to attend the sessions may just turn up at 2pm on 10th May, but in order for needs / interests to be catered for, it is advised to contact Fiona Hall in advance. 07341 265319
All sessions are at St David’s Church Holmbridge. Wednesdays 2pm – 3.30pm are free of charge, with refreshments provided.
